Dental implants are a great solution for a missing tooth, but not sure it they are right for you? When compared to crowns, bridges and dentures, the preferred choice is dental implants. They are a long term solution to dental problems, they are secure and comfortable, they don’t slip like dentures, keep the jawbone from deteriorating, aesthetically appealing, and give you the confidence to smile.
Is a dental implant worth the investment?
When compared to other denial procedures, dental implants are well worth the investment. For instance, dentures typically have a life span of 5 to 7 years, bridges 7-10 years, while a dental implant can last a lifetime. There is no need for periodic adjustment, they prevent bone loss and preserve facial appearance.
Typically dental implants have three parts.
The implant: A screw typically made from titanium, because of osseointeration, a naturally occurring process where titanium fuses with the jaw bone, acts as the root for your new tooth. Since the jawbone integrates with the screw it becomes very strong and permanent.
The abutment: The connector or post (the part protruding from the gum) holds and supports the new tooth. It is permanent, but can be removed by a doctor.
The crown: It a custom made prosthetic tooth, usually made from porcelain or zirconium. Made to look like your natural teeth is positioned on top of the post.
Dental implants need to be cared for just like natural teeth, brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Ensuring the area surrounding the implant is clean. They also still require regular dental exams.
